Steelers has growing skepticism on Aaron Rodgers’ return ahead of draft

With just a few days before the NFL Draft, there is still no clear end to the waiting game involving Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The longer it drags on, the deeper the uncertainty becomes.

Rodgers remains undecided about his future. He only signed a one-year deal with the Steelers last year. Will he finally retire or give it another shot? No one knows the answer. Possibly even himself.

On his podcast, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tackled how Rodgers’ indecision has left Pittsburgh in a pickle, underscoring the skepticism surrounding the four-time MVP.

“I think we all believe that he’s going to be back, but he’s not back. I do think that their (Steelers) backup plan, if he decided not to come back, would have been Kirk Cousins. Pivoting to him. Now, Kirk Cousins has gone and signed with the Raiders,” said Schefter.

“So there is no real veteran backup pivot plan in the event that Aaron Rodgers decides that he’s not going to play this year. Again, if he was so convinced that he was coming back, why isn’t it done yet?”

It is unclear if the Steelers are targeting a quarterback in the upcoming draft. They own the 21st pick, and finding a possible replacement for the 42-year-old Rodgers could be the way to go, regardless of his decision.

If he returns for another year, the Steelers might want to think twice about handing him the keys again, as he led the team to a middling 10-7 record, while also seeing his numbers drop.

“We expect he’s going to be back. Nothing’s changed and all that. But now, we have an actual football event in the city of Pittsburgh next week in which quarterbacks will be taken, and this team doesn’t have clarity yet,” added Schefter.

Rodgers passed for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 16 games last season.

As of now, the Steelers’ quarterback rotation consists of Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.
