Steelers claim NFC South punter, waive journeyman WR
At this stage of the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still refining their roster for when the regular season rolls around. Their latest move saw Pittsburgh bring in some extra special teams competition.
The Steelers have claimed punter Aidan Laros off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. In turn, wide receiver Brandon Johnson has been released.
Laros signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 draft. Before playing a snap in the NFL, he has now found himself on his second franchise.
The punter spent the final two seasons of his collegiate career with Kentucky. In 2025, he averaged 44.5 yards over his career-high 50 punts. His efforts earned him a place on the Ray Guy Award watch list.
Now with the Steelers, Laros is behind veteran Cameron Johnston, who signed in free agency for his second stint with the team. He spit time between the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants in 2025, only appearing in four games.
Still, Johnston averaged 44.5 yards per punt. He comes to the Steelers with eight years of NFL experience, averaging 47.2 yards over his 458 punts total. Johnston has struggled to find his permanent footing, but Pittsburgh clearly believes he still has plenty of gas left in the tank. And he played for them in 2024, giving the franchise some familiarity.
Throughout the offseason, Laros will now have an opportunity to push the veteran and prove he deserves to be the starting punter. Still, that would take quite the effort, and leg, from the UDFA.
