Steelers break all-time NFL Draft record previously held by Detroit
There is a new NFL Draft atop the all-time history books. Two years after Detroit made the 2024 NFL Draft the most-attended of all-time, Pittsburgh Steelers fans showed out to make the Steel City the new No. 1.
The Steelers teased record-setting attendance all month, and their fans backed that up on draft night. Roughly 320,000 fans packed Acrisure Stadium on Day One, making the 2026 NFL Draft the most-watched first round in league history, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Detroit set the record with roughly 275,000, meaning about 45,000 more people flooded Acrisure Stadium in 2026 than Ford Field in 2024.
With the draft trending toward a record-setting turnout all offseason, Pittsburgh had prepared accordingly. Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward revealed the city shut down several roads and bridges near Acrisure Stadium to prepare for the landmark event.
The NFL Draft has been raking in massive crowds since the league decided to move the event around each year in 2015. Since then, even smaller cities like Green Bay have attracted massive crowds to watch Roger Goodell announce the league’s newest players.
All 320,000 fans got a firsthand view of one of the most unpredictable drafts in NFL history. Everyone knew what the Las Vegas Raiders would do with the No. 1 overall pick, but the rest of the opening round turned out to be the crapshoot many had forecasted.
Ironically, the Steelers seemed to have the most trouble with their own pick at No. 21. Pittsburgh had zeroed in on USC receiver Makai Lemon, so much so that it got the wideout on the phone, before the Philadelphia Eagles moved up at the last second to steal him at No. 20.
