Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama grabbing leadership reins by horns with offseason Paris workouts

Victor Wembanyama came mighty close to leading the San Antonio Spurs to the championship in what was his third season with the franchise. Now, the 2026 DPOY appears intent on giving himself and his team the best chance of going all the way in the upcoming season.

Per BasketNews, the French prodigy is organizing a ‘gathering’ back home for some of his Spurs teammates, with CEO R.C. Buford revealing that ‘8-10’ players will be joining Wemby in France. The move is aimed at helping the Spurs’ returning players and new additions develop chemistry alongside Wembanyama well before training camp for the new season begins.

“Our coaches, our players are going to be here together next week doing some work… in Paris. They’re coming over to see Victor, about 8 or 10,” Buford said.

While San Antonio’s training camp is set to begin somewhere in late September, the 22-year-old himself is set to represent France during a packed August schedule which includes exhibition games against Slovenia and Sweden. The Spurs were understood to be one of the teams chasing LeBron James’ signature before he signed with the 76ers in free agency, but have made multiple changes this offseason.

They signed Tobias Harris, added rookies Tarris Reed Jr. and Jayden Quaintance, and re-signed veteran Harrison Barnes. Regardless, Wemby’s approach appears to take a direct leaf out of Luka Doncic’s book.

Doncic is himself organizing a four-day training camp for his Los Angeles Lakers teammates in August. The camp is set to include basketball workouts, golf, sightseeing around Ljubljana, and other team-bonding activities. The Slovenian previously paid for a team-building day at the Porsche Experience Center in Southern California in October 2025, where players tested different Porsche models following practice.

Of course, the Spurs are in prime position to compete for the title once again next season, and will be delighted with the initiative Wemby is already showing, well before the season tips off.
