Spurs superfan Selena Gomez clarifies ‘lol’ comment on post about Taylor Swift at Knicks game

After a comment made by San Antonio Spurs superfan Selena Gomez went viral in response to a picture of Taylor Swift at the New York Knicks’ Game 4 win, the pop star has clarified it.

She took to her Instagram Stories early on Friday, June 12, 2026, to respond to all of the speculation. It wasn’t nefarious, as she was responding to MTV’s picture of Swift hugging a relieved Mariska Hargitay.

Her saying “lol” wasn’t anything deeper than that. Gomez emphasized that she’d “never insult my friends,” and she just thought the picture was funny.

“Woke up and was sent so many texts,” she began. “I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide of the page.”

She then explained that she had wagered on the game against her friends. The comment was “poking fun” at her opponents, who had come out on top.

“Believe it or not[,] I do have other friends in my life,” she said, presumably talking to those who assumed she was taking aim at Swift. “But quickly forget that most assume otherwise.”

Ultimately, it’s not that deep. She concluded it by saying, “It’s a basketball game.”

Perhaps some of the speculation arose after Gomez called out bandwagon Knicks fans in a since-deleted post. She was heartbroken over the Spurs’ 29-point collapse, but she appreciated the game.

While she was “happy” for the Knicks and the franchise’s fans, she shaded the newer ones, saying that it’s “so funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol.”

Granted, Gomez is a longtime Spurs fan, so she’s seen the ups and downs of the franchise, which has won five championships in her lifetime. She then posted a throwback picture of herself in an old Adidas Spurs jersey, seemingly proving her longtime fandom.
