Spurs’ Stephon Castle teases Gregg Popovich’s message before flying to New York
The San Antonio Spurs are in do or die mode as they head to New York for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Knicks. The Spurs dropped both of their home games to open up this series and will now head into Madison Square Garden, which could be one of the loudest environments in recent NBA history.
Now, Spurs guard Stephon Castle has revealed what legendary former head coach Gregg Popovich said to the team before they headed to the Big Apple.
“We talked to Pop, before we flew down here. Pretty much his message was, just let the last two games go,” said Castle, per Kris Pursiainen of ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter.
Popovich has no shortage of experience in battling through adversity in the playoffs, and frankly, neither do the current iteration of the Spurs, who already fought back from deficits to win both the semifinals and conference finals out west.
However, things are a bit different now against a Knicks team that didn’t even play particularly well in Games 1 and 2 and still found ways to win both games on the road. San Antonio will need Victor Wembanyama to be much more aggressive from the opening tipoff to set the tone in Game 3, and Castle and backcourt running mate De’Aaron Fox could also use some better efficiency from the field.
San Antonio will have to dig deeper than ever before to scrap their way back into this series.
Game 3 of Spurs vs Knicks is slated for Monday evening in the hostile confines of Madison Square Garden in New York City.
