Spurs’ Dylan Harper reveals Gregg Popovich’s text after Game 5

Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals was a tough loss for the San Antonio Spurs, as the club fell 127-114 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. With San Antonio facing elimination in Thursday’s Game 6 matchup, rookie Dylan Harper revealed the motivating text he received from former head coach Gregg Popovich.

The 20-year-old guard claimed that Popovich sent him a message almost immediately after the Game 5 loss. Harper explained how Popovich informed him to “get the job done” against the Thunder. It’s a simple message, but perhaps it’s the one Harper needed hear.

“After Game 5, [Popovich] texted me, personally,” said Harper. “Just like, ‘You gotta find a way how to get the job done.’ That’s been my biggest focus, is, how can I just prepare myself to get the job done?”

Dylan Harper played 25 minutes in Game 5, but he wasn’t all that effective in the contest. The former No. 2 overall pick ended that game with five points, six rebounds, and three assists, while shooting just 20.0% from the field. His only field goal came off one of his three shots from beyond the perimeter, and he hit two of his two free-throw attempts.

The last time Gregg Popovich voiced his opinion with the Spurs was immediately after the 123-108 Game 3 loss, where the five-time champion coach delivered a message to the entire team going into Game 4. Whatever was said during that time seemed to have worked, as San Antonio won Game 4 by 21 points to tie the series 2-2.

Game 6 is a win-or-go-home situation for the Spurs. The contest is scheduled to tip off at 8:30 p.m. EST on Thursday and will take place in San Antonio.
