‘Spoiled his legacy’ – Mohamed Salah told to apologise to Liverpool – but club still have to sell him in January

Liverpool have to cash in Mohamed Salah once the transfer window reopens next month – he has spoiled his legacy at Anfield.

That’s the bold view of ex-Reds striker Dean Saunders, who has also implored the 33-year-old to apologise over his bombshell outburst.

Speaking to the media after the 3-3 draw at Leeds over the weekend – in which Salah was benched for a third game running – he hit out at Arne Slot and the board.

The Egypt international accused the Merseyside outfit of throwing him under the bus, claimed someone at the club wanted him gone, while stating he had no relationship with Slot.

Salah has been subject to criticism over his explosive admission, with his comments seeing him omitted from Liverpool’s travelling squad that beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

And while he is the club’s all-time top Premier League scorer with 188 goals, Saunders believes now is the time for ties to be cut.

talkSPORT understands that multiple Saudi clubs have the ex-Chelsea forward on their radar ahead of the January transfer window.

It’s Sal over

Speaking on The Sports Bar, Saunders said: “Even before this game, I think they’ve got to sell him now.

“Even though I was saying, ‘If you sign Mo Salah, it’ll send a message out to the world that you mean business.’

“It’s gone pear-shaped, and I think right now, he’s made a decision I’m either going to get him sacked, or I’m off.’

“So, he’s 33, rather than waiting around like Manchester United done with [Jadon] Sancho for an apology, and it ended up he was sat in the reserves for six months.

“Either get rid of him, or he apologises and Liverpool move forward.”

Saunders also conceded that while he finds it difficult to criticise a player that has given the club so many golden moments, ultimately, no-one is bigger than the club.

He remarked: “He’s obviously wrong, what he’s done, and I find it difficult to have a go at Mo Salah because he is an unbelievable footballer, a legend.

“But we’ve seen signs of it in the past, and this week, what he’s done, he’s had a couple of days now.

“His agent must have had a word with him, and had a look at the reaction to what he said.

“All he’s got to do is come out and apologise, because what he said was totally wrong.

“He came out and said, ‘I’ve done a lot for this club,’ when you play for Liverpool, it’s a privilege to play for Liverpool.

“I don’t care who you are, because Billy Liddell in the 50s, Billy Liddell, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, have all done the same as Mo Salah.

“And it’s a privilege to play for the club, you can’t come out and say the things he said.

“And if I was his agent now, or anybody in his family, I’d say, ‘Just apologise and say you had the hump, just say you had the hump after the game.

“‘You’re emotional and you’ve come out and said something which you shouldn’t have said.’

“He’s spoiled his legacy at the club.”

Liverpool will now turn their attention to a clash with Brighton at Anfield on Saturday.

But it remains to be seen whether Salah will be recalled back to the squad – despite the player working on his fitness in the absence of his teammates.

Salah will then fly off to Morocco to represent Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The player could be away from Merseyside until after January 18, which is when the final takes place.
