South Africa vs South Korea predictions and betting tips – Backing the Koreans to get the job done

South Korea head into their final Group A game knowing a win will be enough to secure their place in the knockout stages and I think they’ll get it.

I’ve not been convinced by South Africa at this tournament. They were comfortably second best against Mexico and while they showed more character to earn a point against Czech Republic, they still look short of quality in the final third which is concerning.

South Korea, on the other hand, have played some decent football in patches and I actually thought they were unfortunate not to get something against Mexico. With Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in and Hwang Hee-chan in the side, I just think they have too much attacking quality for Bafana Bafana.

Below are my predictions and best bets for the game.

My three favourite bets for this one:

South Africa vs South Korea head to head overview

  • Date: Wednesday 24 June 2026
  • Kick-off: 10pm UK time
  • Venue: Estadio Akron, Guadalajara, Mexico
  • Where to watch: BBC Two and BBC iPlayer
  • Referee: TBC
  • Last meeting: June 2019, South Korea 1-0 South Africa (friendly)
  • Last 10 matches: South Korea are unbeaten in the last three meetings between the nations.
  • Favourite to win: South Korea at around 4/6

South Africa vs South Korea predicted lineups

South Africa need a win to have any chance of progressing and Hugo Broos is expected to stick with the side that drew against Czech Republic. South Korea are likely to name a strong XI knowing three points should secure qualification.

  • South Africa expected lineup: Williams; Mudau, Xulu, Sibisi, Modiba; Mokoena, Mokotjo, Appollis; Tau, Rayners, Foster
  • South Korea expected lineup: Kim Seung-gyu; Lee Han-beom, Kim Min-jae, Kim Tae-hyeon; Seol Young-woo, Hwang In-beom, Park Yong-woo, Lee Tae-seok; Lee Kang-in, Hwang Hee-chan, Son Heung-min

South Africa vs South Korea predictions

I’ve found South Africa quite difficult to trust throughout this group. They were poor against Mexico and while the draw with Czech Republic keeps them alive, I still don’t think they’ve shown enough going forward.

Most of their good work has come from moments rather than sustained pressure and that’s a concern against a South Korea side that should see plenty of the ball.

I actually thought South Korea were a bit unlucky against Mexico. A goalkeeping mistake ended up proving costly and they certainly created enough opportunities to get something from the game. Before that they deservedly beat Czech Republic and looked dangerous every time they got their front players involved.

The big difference for me is quality in attack. South Africa work hard and they’ll make it competitive, but South Korea have players capable of producing something out of nothing.

Son remains the star attraction, Lee Kang-in pulls the strings creatively and Hwang Hee-chan’s pace causes problems for any defence.

Over the course of 90 minutes I just think they’ll create more chances and eventually make the breakthrough. They know what’s at stake, they’ve got the stronger squad and I fancy them to get the job done without conceding. I’m calling it 2-0 South Korea.

South Africa vs South Korea betting tips

All three of my bets revolve around the same view. I think South Korea are the better side, I think they’ll control most of the game and I don’t see South Africa creating enough chances to really trouble them.

South Korea can take care of business

This isn’t the sort of game where I want to get too clever. South Korea know a win likely sends them through and I think they’re the right favourites.

They’ve looked the more convincing side throughout the group and have far more quality in the final third.

Koreans can keep it tight

South Africa have struggled to create chances consistently and that’s why I like the win to nil angle.

South Korea looked solid for large parts against both Czech Republic and Mexico and with Kim Min-jae marshalling the defence, I can see them shutting the door here.

Kang-in can make the difference

Lee Kang-in is the player that keeps catching my eye here. Everything seems to go through him when South Korea are on the front foot and he has the quality to unlock stubborn defences and there seems value in his odds to score anytime.
