Snooker star proposes to partner immediately after whitewash Crucible defeat

Wayne Townsend may have lost his World Seniors Snooker Championship clash, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

Townsend was on the wrong side of a 4-0 thrashing in the first round to Welsh cueist Dominic Dale.

However, Townsend quickly moved on from the whitewash in rather unusual fashion.

Immediately after the defeat, Townsend brought his partner down onto the floor of the Crucible.

Sensing what was coming, she instantly placed her hands over her face in joy before standing across Townsend, who dropped to one knee and proposed.

After she said yes, Townsend rose back to his feet and placed the ring on her finger.

The Crucible crowd lapped up the occasion, offering plenty of cheers and a standing ovation for Townsend and his now-fiancee.

Man about Town

Townsend’s proposal ensured he departed this year’s tournament, which also features the likes of Jimmy White and snooker icon Ronnie O’Sullivan in the field, with a happy memory.

The 46-year-old entered the tournament with hopes of repeating his performance at last year’s edition.

At the 2025 World Seniors Snooker Championship, Townsend enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately, Townsend could not progress further as he was beaten 4-2 by Aaron Canavan.

Townsend has been a constant presence on snooker’s senior and amateur circuits, although he is yet to secure a professional tour card.

The 46-year-old’s inability to land one is not for a lack of trying, with Townsend even attempting to claim one as recently as 2024.

How do players obtain a World Seniors Snooker Tour membership?

However, he has had no issue with landing his World Seniors Snooker Tour membership.

According to the World Seniors Snooker site, a player must be over 40 on or before the first day of action at the event they wish to play.

The membership costs £25.

As for the remaining field at this year’s World Seniors Championship, ‘The Rocket’ is still in contention.

O’Sullivan, who received a bye into the second round thanks to his seeding of fourth, beat Ireland’s Ken Doherty to progress to the quarter-finals.

The seven-time world champion will next face Peter Lines, who overcame fifth seed Stuart Bingham.
