Shubman Gill retires hurt after scoring fluent 80 in first ODI against England
Team India was dealt a major injury scare during the first ODI against England at Edgbaston as captain Shubman Gill was forced to retire hurt after a well-made 80 while leading the run chase.
Gill looked in complete control at the crease and played a captain's knock after India lost both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early. However, just after bringing up a century partnership with Shreyas Iyer, the 25-year-old appeared to be in discomfort and signalled that he was unable to continue.
The India skipper removed his gloves before crouching on the field, clutching the back of his right leg. After briefly receiving attention, Gill slowly walked off the ground, raising concerns in the Indian camp over the extent of the injury.
Chasing a challenging target, India suffered an early blow when Rohit Sharma departed for 11, while Virat Kohli was trapped LBW by Jofra Archer for just five in his landmark 300th ODI innings. With India under pressure, Gill and Shreyas Iyer rebuilt the innings with a composed century stand, shifting the momentum back in the visitors' favour.
Gill mixed caution with aggression during his innings and looked set for another ODI hundred before his knock was cut short by injury.
