Serena Williams’ doubles return takes a hit amid Victoria Mboko injury

Serena Williams’s return to professional tennis has gone well. On Tuesday, she won her first match since retiring in 2023 in doubles alongside Vicky Mboko at Queen’s Club in London. They defeated the No. 3-seeded pair of Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6, 6-2.

However, the momentum may have been halted. On Wednesday, Mboko fell during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova, injuring her knee and ending the match, per The Tennis Letter. She had to leave the match trailing 2-6, 3-4.

Therefore, Williams could be without her doubles partner. On Thursday, they are scheduled to play against Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals.

Mkobo is a 19-year-old Canadian who is ranked No. 9 in the WTA in singles and No. 134 in doubles. She has an overall record of 153–61 and has won two WTA singles titles. Mkobo won the 2025 WTA 1000 Canadian Open and WTA 250 Hong Kong Open.

Meanwhile, Williams’ comeback has received plenty of fanfare. The 23-time Grand Slam winner is 44 years old and, since retiring, has been involved in business and family. Her biggest drive to come back has been to enjoy the pleasure of competing.

Moreover, Williams has not officially ruled out a return to singles with the biggest tournaments coming ahead. It

Wimbledon is scheduled for Jun 29 to Jul 12, and Williams said anything yet about a potential return to center court. Mboko made her Wimbledon debut last year, in which she made it all the way to the second round before losing to Hailey Baptiste.

The status of Mboko remains unknown.
