Senegal stripped of AFCON title as Morocco handed walkover victory in astonishing ruling

Morocco have been declared Africa Cup of Nations winners with Senegal’s victory overturned in an unprecedented ruling.

The Atlas Lions were beaten 1-0 by Senegal in January in a match littered with major controversy and pure chaos.

Months later, Senegal have now been adjudged to have forfeited the match when they walked off the pitch in protest at a penalty that was awarded to Morocco following a VAR check.

Former Liverpool winger Sadio Mane ordered his Senegal team-mates to return to the pitch, following a 16-minute delay, and the penalty was missed by Brahim Diaz.

However, the ruling states that Senegal’s actions caused them to throw the match with Morocco now declared 3-0 winners.

Reacting on talkSPORT during live coverage of Arsenal’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen, ex-Republic of Ireland international Andy Townsend said: “That is astonishing.”
