Isiah Thomas honestly compares Knicks’ Jalen Brunson and Stephen Curry title runs

Jalen Brunson has skyrocketed towards the top of all-time great players for the New York Knicks after leading the way for the franchise in their first championship run in 53 years. And the road Brunson and the Knicks took to get to the mountaintop wasn’t easy whatsoever, as they had to overcome a San Antonio Spurs team that had more than enough talent to win it all — overturning double-digit deficits four times in the NBA Finals en route to hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy.

There shouldn’t be any questions anymore regarding Brunson’s status as a legend, not just for the Knicks, but in the history of the NBA. There aren’t too many players who can score 45 points in a closeout game on the road to secure the title, and that’s exactly what Brunson did.

For Isiah Thomas, he even believes that Brunson did more for the Knicks than Stephen Curry did for the Golden State Warriors in their title runs.

“Curry did it at 6’3″ more or less shooting, scoring. Brunson and I, we did it, scoring and assisting. That is something totally different. And that’s why it’s so unique. Because he can assist. And then he scores. Curry was more just a scorer,” Thomas said on FanDuel’s Run It Back.

Thomas is crediting Brunson’s game, and deservedly so, but it has to be said that Curry was way more than just a scorer for the Warriors in their dynasty years.

His gravity made it so that the Warriors had so much space all over the court, and it’s the sheer amount of attention that he draws from opposing defenses that makes him such a devastating weapon to face. It’s not like Curry was hogging the ball anyway; he averaged 6.0 assists in his 34 career NBA Finals games, so the notion that he won it all by “just scoring” is not true.

Brunson even averaged just 4.6 dimes during the 2026 NBA Finals, which is fewer than Curry’s lifetime Finals average. The Knicks star deserves the plaudits, but there’s no need to be dragging Curry’s name around when he’s quite the all-time great himself.
