Salford v Grimsby prediction

Salford head into their home second leg of their League Two play off semi final with a 2-1 lead, now games away from a first ever season in the third tier having this season earned the club’s highest ever league finish.

Goals from Kallum Cesay and Adebola Oluwo saw Karl Robinson’s side come from behind to win at Blundell Park on Sunday afternoon after Reece Staunton had given Grimsby the lead inside the first minute of the game.

The Ammies now won three of their last four matches and will have a one goal lead to defend at the Peninsula Stadium, in which they boast a fantastic record with only Cambridge having won more home games than Robinson’s men in League Two this season.

The Manchester side have won six of their last seven matches in front of their home fans, conceding just two goals in that run, leaving them in a very strong position in their hunt for a first ever EFL play off final.

Grimsby head won three of their final four matches of the season to book their place in the League Two play offs in their bid to return to the third tier for the first time since 2004, as well as four of their last five home games but couldn’t keep that run going on Sunday.

David Artell’s side will now need to go to Salford and win on the night to have any chance of realising their ideas of promotion, and though they have won two of their last three games on the road, their most recent away game only saw them muster a 1-1 draw against 20th placed Tranmere.

However, the Mariners are unbeaten across their last five visits to the Peninsula Stadium, a run which includes wins in each of their last visits, including a 2-0 win back in October earlier this season.

Despite the Lincolnshire side’s strong record at Salford, their needing to chase the tie from the first whistle could play into the hosts’ hands, and the Ammies’ strong home record should see them through to Wembley, a 2-1 home win very much on the cards.

The winner of Friday night’s tie will take on either Notts County or Chesterfield in Bank Holiday Monday’s final at Wembley.

Dan the man for the Ammies
