Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally spotted at practice amid injury recoveries
The New York Liberty have been without Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally to start the 2026 WNBA season as both players are currently recovery from injury. However, it’s possible that both players are trending towards a potential return.
Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally were both participants during the scrimmage portion of the Liberty practice on Monday, as per Madeline Kenney of The New York Post. While nothing is official yet, it does indeed suggest that the team might have two of their stars back in the lineup soon.
Ionescu has been sidelined since the preseason when she suffered an ankle injury against the Connecticut Sun on May 3. Her initial prognosis was a two-week time frame of recovery. Sabally was diagnosed with a cyst during training camp and did not appear in any preseason games.
When Sabally first joined the Liberty via free agency in the offseason, she was still in the midst of reconditioning following placement in concussions protocol during last year’s WNBA Finals. As a result, she also missed the entire 2026 Unrivaled season.
Sabally was the Liberty’s big splash in the offseason as they team looks to get back to contender status among the WNBA’s elite.
Without Ionescu and Sabally in the lineup, the Liberty have opened the regular season at 3-1. They are essentially tied with the Chicago Sky for the second best record in the league, and behind only the 4-1 Las Vegas Aces. The team has not played since last Thursday, a win against the Portland Fire. They do not play again until this coming Thursday, May 21, against the Golden State Valkyries.
