Sabrina Ionescu fuels Liberty hype train for Commissioner’s Cup final vs. Aces

The New York Liberty are looking like one of the WNBA’s best teams during the 2026 season. New York is 12-6 on the season after defeating Las Vegas 87-76 on Tuesday night. One Liberty player put on a vintage performance, reminding the rest of the league why she is one of the best around.

Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu is finally looking like her old self again. Ionescu logged her first double-double of the season in New York’s latest victory over Las Vegas. She managed 16 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists in her 30 minutes on the court.

The veteran guard has only played in six games this season after dealing with foot and back issues. Ionescu returned to action on June 14th against the Mystics, though she was on a minutes restriction.

Now that Ionescu is playing at a high level again, New York is ready to stand up against the best teams in the W.

“Two of the best organizations in our league,” Ionescu said after the game, per ESPN’s Michael Voepel. “[The Aces] have continued to pave the way in what they’ve done, contending every single year, winning multiple championships. [The matchup] is always a great basketball game being played … some of the best players the game has ever seen on the court.”

Ionescu is not exaggerating either. The two teams account for the last four WNBA championships as well as two Commissioner’s Cups.

Speaking of, the Liberty and Aces will face each other again in the Commissioner’s Cup final, which takes place on June 30th in New York. It should feel like a playoff atmosphere with two of the W’s best teams squaring off.

But New York cannot look too far ahead, as they have a few matchups before their rematch with Las Vegas.
