Rockies sign former Braves reliever to minor league deal

The Colorado Rockies added bullpen depth on Thursday by signing veteran reliever John Brebbia to a minor league contract. The move came during an off day for Colorado following its road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the team set to begin a home series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday night.

Brebbia, 35, was with the Red Sox during spring training after signing a minor league deal in December. He later exercised an opt-out clause near the end of camp and joined the Minnesota Twins on another minor league agreement. After things unraveled at Triple-A St. Paul, Brebbia triggered another opt-out and was released.

The right-hander logged a 6.20 ERA across 20 1/3 innings with St. Paul. His stay featured a promising opening stretch in which he allowed one run while recording a 17-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 10 2/3 innings. However, he surrendered 13 earned runs over his next 9 2/3 innings before opting out of the deal.

Brebbia last appeared in the majors during the 2025 season with the Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves. He went 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 22 appearances. Over the last two seasons, he has pitched for the Tigers, Braves, and Chicago White Sox, combining for a 6.41 ERA in 78 2/3 innings while allowing 1.83 home runs per nine innings since 2024.

Across eight MLB seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, White Sox, Tigers, and Braves, he has compiled a 4.04 ERA in 378 1/3 innings with a 25.6% strikeout rate and a 7.5% walk rate. He also has four career saves and 62 holds.

Colorado entered Thursday at 20-37, last in the National League West, with the bullpen carrying a 4.51 ERA. Relievers Jimmy Herget and Victor Vodnik remain on the injured list, making additional bullpen depth a priority for the Rockies.
