Rival evaluator in shock at Red Sox’s ‘ridiculous’ Adley Rutschman trade

With the Boston Red Sox making a blockbuster trade for catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles, there is no denying that the move has sent shockwaves throughout the baseball world ahead of Monday evening’s deadline. As the Red Sox have shown dominance since right before the All-Star break and look to keep it going, the team showed its commitment with the Rutschman trade, though others are stunned by what the team gave up.

In return for Rutschman, as Boston also got catcher Jake Rogers and cash, the team would give Baltimore catcher Carlos Narvaez and prospects, such as pitchers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, plus outfielder Enddy Azocar, via Jake Rill. Looking at the prospects, Eyanson, Witherspoon, and Azocar are ranked No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 in the system, via MLB.com, respectively.

“C Jake Rogers is also going from Orioles to Red Sox in this trade, according to a source, as [Alex Speier] reported. O’s getting: RHP Anthony Eyanson, RHP Kyson Witherspoon, OF Enddy Azocar, C Carlos Narvaez, PTBNL (player to be named later)…Sox getting: C Adley Rutschman, C Jake Rogers, cash,” Rill wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

As far as the reaction, Sean McAdam of MassLive would relay the thoughts of an evaluator on another team who was “stunned” by what the Red Sox gave the Orioles for Rutschman.

“I’m absolutely dumbfounded by this…This is literally one of the most ridiculous trades I’ve seen in 30 years,” the evaluator said.

So far this season for Baltimore, Rutschman has recorded a .251 batting average to go along with eight home runs and 47 RBIs in 67 games, as he’s currently on the injured list with wrist inflammation.
