Resurfaced Pat Riley-Bam Adebayo Heat trade take makes Giannis deal even sweeter

The Miami Heat have always been in the business of star-hunting, much to fans’ frustration at times. But this relentlessness of theirs paid off big time on Monday night, as they swung a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. They did give up a hefty price in the end, but what makes this such a huge win for Miami was that they were able to acquire Antetokounmpo without giving up Mr. 83 points himself, Bam Adebayo.

Adebayo has long been beloved in the eyes of Heat president Pat Riley. The swiss-army knife big man has embodied what it means to be a Heat player, embedding Heat Culture deep within his veins, and Riley loves him so much that he went as far as to say in the past that he would only trade Adebayo for “Victor Wembanyama and eight first-round picks”.

Suffice to say, the Heat’s patience allowed them to trade for Antetokounmpo without giving up Adebayo, making their blockbuster deal with the Bucks that much sweeter. The point of acquiring a superstar like Giannis is to pair him with other high-caliber players, and keeping Adebayo allows Miami to do just that.

But again, the Heat gave up essentially all of their depth to acquire Giannis. They traded Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis along with three first-round picks, a pick swap, and a second-round pick, just to acquire the Bucks star.

The Heat have their work cut out for them to build a championship-caliber roster around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. They still have Andrew Wiggins (assuming he accepts his player option for next season), Davion Mitchell, and Pelle Larsson around, but they may well have to re-sign Norman Powell and make even more signings to make up for the loss of four rotation players.

Nonetheless, having the roster built on the Antetokounmpo-Adebayo foundation has to be a recipe for success for this Heat franchise moving forward.
