Reports: Mumbai Indians to review captaincy, coaching, and trade plans ahead of IPL 2027
Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to hold a crucial season review meeting in England next week, with major decisions regarding the franchise's future expected to dominate discussions. The five-time IPL champions will evaluate multiple aspects of their disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, including captaincy, coaching, and potential player trades.
The meeting is expected to involve the franchise's ownership and senior management, who will assess head coach Mahela Jayawardene's post-season report before deciding the roadmap for the 2027 season.
As reported by The Times of India, Jayawardene's position as head coach could come under scrutiny after MI endured another underwhelming season. The former Sri Lanka captain returned to the coaching setup ahead of IPL 2025, where the franchise finished fourth before slipping to ninth place in the 2026 edition.
While speculation around dressing-room unrest and Hardik Pandya's future has dominated headlines in recent weeks, the report suggests the coaching setup will also be reviewed as MI look to rebuild and return to title contention.
Hardik Pandya's future remains one of the biggest talking points ahead of the review meeting. Several franchises are believed to have shown interest in acquiring the all-rounder, with the Mumbai Indians management expected to take a final call after assessing the team's plans.
The report further added that trade discussions are unlikely to revolve around Hardik alone, as another former India captain has also reportedly attracted interest from multiple franchises. However, the player's identity has not been disclosed.
Bumrah and Tilak Varma among captaincy options
Captaincy is also expected to be a major point of discussion, with the Mumbai Indians likely to reassess their leadership plans for the upcoming season.
Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as a strong contender for the role, having consistently been available for the franchise over the last three seasons. The pace spearhead also captained MI during their IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings in the absence of Hardik Pandya and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav.
Speaking at the toss before that match, Bumrah had hinted at his desire to lead the franchise.
"I didn't think that I would be a Test captain before becoming MI captain," he had said at the toss.
Young batter Tilak Varma is also reportedly being considered as a long-term leadership option. With the Mumbai Indians looking to bounce back after consecutive disappointing campaigns, the decisions taken during next week's review meeting could shape the franchise's future ahead of IPL 2027.
