Red Sox’s Roman Anthony seen fielding balls of Green Monster same day as 60-day IL move

As the Boston Red Sox wrap up the series against the New York Yankees on Sunday night, the team announced some key injury updates, including an update to outfielder Roman Anthony. While fans have been awaiting injury updates to the Red Sox star in Anthony, the latest move from the team on Sunday and his progress from the wrist issue are giving fans mixed signals.

Shown in a video by Rob Bradford, Anthony was seen fielding balls that were hit off the Green Monster at Fenway Park, but while he continues to put in the work, it will be a bit longer before he returns. As announced by Boston on Sunday, Anthony was moved from the 10-day injured list (IL) to the 60-day IL.

“Reinstated infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez from the 60-Day Injured List,” the team posted to their X, formerly Twitter. “Optioned catcher/first baseman Mickey Gasper to Triple-A Worcester. Transferred outfielder Roman Anthony to the 60-Day Injured List.”

On Wednesday, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy would say that Anthony “hasn’t made any substantive progress” on the wrist injury, besides trying to swing a lighter bat, according to Tim Healy. Anthony would even say himself on June 13 that the progression of the injury has been “a lot slower” than he thought.

“It’s progressing, progressing a lot slower than I’d imagined at the beginning of this, but definitely progressing, which is the biggest thing,” Anthony said, via Boston.com. “It’s just pain, that’s what it was, and until it’s not that I’ll be here, but as soon as it feels like it starts to get a whole lot better, I’m sure we’ll have a better idea of where we’re at and how it’s going to go from here.”

It remains to be seen when Anthony returns, as his last game was on May 4.
