Red Sox’s Roman Anthony receives huge injury update on Tuesday

The Boston Red Sox have been without Roman Anthony since early May due to a hand injury. But the outfielder is now taking gradual steps towards a return.

On Tuesday, Anthony was able to take 12-15 dry swings. Assuming no setbacks, interim manager Chad Tracy expects him to continue ramping up what he is able to do, via Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.

“Roman actually took 12 to 15 (dry) swings today and felt much better … next steps will be same thing tomorrow, only increasing the volume of the amount of swings he takes, and he can increase activity as his tolerance dictates,” Tracy said.

There’s still a big gap between dry swings and full baseball activities. But it’s at least a sign that Anthony is healing from his injury. The Red Sox will look for him to increase the amount of dry swing he can take over the week. From there, they’ll look to advance things to live batting practice and eventually a rehab assignment.

There still isn’t a direct timeline for Anthony’s return, but there is at least a plan in place. Sitting at 22-30, Boston knows their lineup would gain a massive spark with the outfielder back at the top of it.

The 2026 season hasn’t been kind to Anthony, perhaps in part due to his hand injury. Before going down, he hit .229 with a home run, five RBIs and two stolen bases over 30 games. But during the 2025 season, Anthony broke onto the seen by hitting .292 with right home runs, 32 RBIs and four stolen bases over 71 games.

Boston will be cautious with Anthony, as the last thing they want is re-injury. But as they try to save their season, the outfielder’s return would provide a massive boon.
