Red Sox’s Roman Anthony gets X-rays result amid hand injury

Boston Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony exited Monday night’s 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers due to right wrist discomfort after sustaining the issue early in the game.

Anthony appeared to aggravate the hand during his first-inning at-bat against Tigers pitcher Tyler Holton, when he fouled off a pitch on a check swing. He was seen flexing his right hand as Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy and head athletic trainer Brandon Henry checked on him. Although Anthony remained in the game after taking practice swings and later grounded into a fielder’s choice, he was replaced in left field by Masataka Yoshida in the bottom of the second inning.

Postgame evaluations provided an initial positive update. Tracy confirmed that X-rays taken on Anthony’s right hand came back negative.

“Imaging tonight was negative, but we are gonna send him back to Boston to see our hand specialist just to let him look at it and make sure,” said Tracy. “I think the whole point is to get him back with our specialist to see him and see how he is. If everything’s good, we’ll get him back here. But we’ve got to get him back there first.”

Anthony, who turns 22 on May 13, has fighting his swing in his second MLB season, hitting .229 with one home run, five RBIs, five doubles, and a .675 OPS over 30 games. He had also recently returned from missing four games due to upper back soreness and previously ended last season early because of a Grade 2 oblique strain.
