Red Sox make huge pitcher roster move ahead of Astros series
The Boston Red Sox’s struggles have been difficult to ignore in 2026. Boston was most recently defeated 8-1 by the Toronto Blue Jays, and the team is now 12-19 and in last place in the American League East standings. The Red Sox already fired manager Alex Cora and other coaches as the team searches for answers. Ahead of Friday’s game against the Houston Astros, Boston made a move that could hep the pitching staff. The Red Sox announced that left-handed pitcher Jake Bennett was recalled from Triple-A and he will start Friday night’s contest.
Bennett, 25, is set to make his MLB debut on Friday. He is the team’s No. 6 overall prospect. The southpaw is clearly ready for the MLB level, as he pitched to a stellar 0.86 ERA across five starts at the Triple-A level this season.
Bennett also limited opposing hitters to a .162 batting average. He struck 16 hitters in his 21 innings of work while walking only three batters as well.
Boston needs all of the help it can get at the moment. The Red Sox could potentially still bounce back and contend for a postseason spot, but the team needs to turn things around sooner rather than later.
Bennett could provide the Red Sox with the momentum boost they need.
The Red Sox will host the Astros for a three-game series this weekend. Both teams have underperformed in 2026, but it should be a competitive series nonetheless. First pitch for Friday night’s game between the Astros and Red Sox is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
