Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy did not hold back on Framber Valdez hitting Trevor Story
The Boston Red Sox played the second game of a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. In the game, Tigers pitcher Framber Valdez gave up back-to-back home runs and then drilled Trevor Story with a pitch, leading to the benches clearing and Valdez being ejected.
After the game, interim manager Chad Tracy was asked if he felt the pitch from Valdez was intentional, per Tyler Milliken of 98.5 The Sports Hub.
“Yes, I do think so. I thought it was weak, and I thought everybody saw it. Their side, our side, I think everybody saw it. It was weak,” Tracy responded.
By the time Valdez gave up the two home runs in the fourth inning, he had already been struggling. Overall, Valdez completed just three innings of work, giving up nine hits, ten runs, with seven earned, a walk, and three home runs. Still, he insisted the pitch was not intentional.
“It was not intentional,” Valdez told reporters through an interpreter. “It might look like it, but it wasn’t. I was trying to throw strikes after the two consecutive home runs. I was trying to go back in the zone and that pitch came out of my hand.”
This is not the first time Valdez has been in controversy on the mound. It happened multiple times when he played for the Houston Astros. After the game, Valdez’s current manager did not seem to support his pitcher.
“We play a really good brand of baseball here. That didn’t feel like it. It’s not judging intent; I have no idea. But I know when you go out on the field and you end up sort of in those confrontations, you usually feel like you’re in your right. And it didn’t feel good being out there,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “So I understand their frustrations. I understand the moment, and it was a low moment of a frustrating night.”
Boston would go on to win the game 10-3, bringing the Red Sox’s record to 15-21 on the season. They finish up the three-game series on Wednesday night against the Tigers.
