It follows Xabi Alonso’s exit as manager in January following just seven months in charge.

Now managed by Alvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid are four points adrift of LaLiga leaders and bitter rivals Barcelona.

Real Madrid plan squad overhaul

With a second successive season without winning the title looking increasingly likely, a mass exodus is expected this summer.

According to Bild, Real Madrid are willing to allow up to six players to leave the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the campaign.

Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are said to be free to leave, with their contracts expiring in June.

Meanwhile, the club are open to selling left-backs Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia along with midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.

Garcia, who is out of contract at the end of next season, has made just six LaLiga starts this season.

Meanwhile, Mendy’s time in the Spanish capital has been hampered with injuries since joining from Lyon in 2019.

The 30-year-old, who has currently sidelined with a muscle problem, has missed 25 matches already this season alone.

Camavinga, however, will have three years left on his deal in the summer.

Positive effect for Trent Alexander-Arnold?

Real Madrid’s plans to allow Carvajal to leave will provide a major boost to Trent Alexander-Arnold, though.

The England international has been competing with the club captain for the starting spot at right-back since arriving in June.

Alexander-Arnold penned a six-year deal with Real Madrid following his move from Liverpool.

Despite a string of injury lay-offs, he has made 24 appearances across all competitions for the club.

In contrast, Carvajal has been limited to 16 outings so far this term.

His rival at right-back has also been in impressive form since his latest return from injury in February.

Carvajal re-joined Real Madrid in 2013 after a season in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

The 34-year-old has gone on to make 444 appearances for the club, winning 26 trophies.

Those titles include six Champions League triumphs and four separate LaLiga victories.
