Ex-Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby releases statement after NFL Supplemental Draft decision

Brendan Sorsby is ending his collegiate football career as he intends on going for the pros following a big decision from Texas Tech.

Sorsby’s decision comes amid legal wrangling over his NCAA eligibility after he admitted to betting on college sports. Last week, Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA that cleared a path for him to play for the Red Raiders in 2026, even after he was declared ineligible.

Sorsby revealed a statement to the public on Monday. The young quarterback has plans on declaring for the NFL’s Supplemental Draft, indicating his time in college is officially over.

“I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue,” Sorsby said in a statement Monday. “As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be, both on and off the field.”

What’s next for Texas Tech after Brendan Sorsby decision

It’s major news for college football as Brendan Sorsby won’t resume his collegiate career. This also presents a shift for Texas Tech as the football program takes a different direction from Sorsby.

Sorsby, who has admitted to betting on college football, placed more than 9,000 bets, totaling at least $90,000, over four years while he was enrolled at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech, including at least 40 wagers involving his team, according to court documents. The NCAA has not seen evidence that Sorsby manipulated his performance, used inside information to make his wagers or shared privileged information with bettors, according to the documents.

Sorsby won’t represent Texas Tech in 2026 after playing four seasons at Indiana and Cincinnati. His final campaign saw him go 7-5 in 12 games, throwing for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Texas Tech prepares for Year 5 under head coach Joey McGuire. They are coming off a 12-2 campaign last year, reaching the College Football Playoff. Despite winning the Big 12 Championship game, they lost in the CFP quarterfinals to the Oregon Ducks.
