Raptors’ Scottie Barnes makes franchise history with bombshell Game 3 vs. Cavs

Entering Thursday night, the Toronto Raptors knew they had to bring it for their backs were against the wall. Going down 3-0 in their first-round matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers was a death sentence to their season, so they had to bring their A-game to avoid seeing their campaign come to a premature end. Scottie Barnes definitely recognized the moment and played his heart out, leading the Raptors to a 126-104 victory to earn their first win of the series.

Barnes took it upon himself to flourish as the Raptors’ first option on offense. He scored 33 points on 11-17 shooting from the field (3-5 from deep, 8-10 from the foul line) to go along with his usual well-rounded stat line: five rebounds, 11 assists, one steal, and one block.

In so doing, Barnes became the first player in franchise history to record at least 30 points, five rebounds, and 10 assists in a single playoff game, as per Josh Lewenberg of TSN. Moreover, with RJ Barrett also recording 33 points, Barnes and Barrett became just the third duo in team history to both score at least 30 in the same playoff game.

This was simply a masterclass from Barnes and this typified what makes him the Raptors’ undisputed franchise player. Not only was he brilliant on offense, he took on the James Harden matchup and slowed The Beard down to the tune of just 18 points on 5-13 shooting from the field.

The Raptors forward has so much versatility on defense that he can match up against Harden or even Donovan Mitchell all while banging bodies with the likes of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen on the interior.

Considering how much Brandon Ingram has struggled through the first three games of the 2026 NBA playoffs, the Raptors needed someone to fill the primary scoring void Ingram’s shooting woes have created. Barnes did just that all while playing elite defense.

The goal now for the Raptors is to build off of this win to avoid going back on the road facing a 3-1 series deficit.
