Rangers’ Jacob deGrom sets mind-blowing strikeout mark only bested by Randy Johnson
The Texas Rangers sent Jacob deGrom to the mound for their Sunday matchup against the Chicago Cubs. In the process, he further etched his name into the MLB record books.
deGrom struck out both Moises Ballestros and Seiya Suzuki in the first inning. He has now surpassed 1,900 punch outs for his career, becoming the second-fastest player to do so behind just Randy Johnson, via the Associated Press.
Overall, deGrom threw seven innings of scoreless baseball, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out 10. Entering the game at 18-21, the Rangers are hoping to get that kind of performance every time the right-hander is stepping onto the mound.
While injuries have taken a bite out of his early season, the two-time Cy Young winner looked impressive through his first seven starts. Entering Sunday’s game, deGrom put up a 3.11 ERA and a 47/8 K/BB ratio. His performance against the Cubs will only boost those numbers further.
The Rangers have come to expect strong production when healthy. deGrom was named to his fifth All-Star Game, and first in Texas, during the 2025 season after posting a 2.97 ERA and a 185/37 K/BB ratio. The Rangers have new addition MacKenzie Gore as well as youngsters Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker as intriguing arms in their rotation. But they’re counting on deGrom to lead the way.
He did exactly that on Sunday, putting his team in a strong position to win. deGrom has already crafted unforgettable legacy over his 13 years in the league. His latest feat reminded fans just how good he has been.
