Rams HC Sean McVay details latest on Jimmy Garoppolo’s potential retirement

Still without a backup quarterback, the Los Angeles Rams are in an interesting position as Jimmy Garoppolo mulls retirement. Head coach Sean McVay acknowledges that the team wants him to return for the 2026 season, but he knows the difficulty of their current position.

After Garoppolo backed up league MVP Matthew Stafford in 2025, McVay and the Rams made it clear they wanted him to return for another year. Following the report of Garoppolo now considering retirement, McVay said Los Angeles is not going to “press” him, but it will “leave the door open.”

“You leave the door open,” McVay said, via NFL insider Ian Rapoport. “You don’t want to press. We want to be able to give him his time, and he knows where we stand.”

Garoppolo, 34, only appeared in three games in 2025 and did not record a single stat the entire year. He has spent the last two seasons with the Rams, establishing consistency and familiarity in the locker room for McVay and Stafford.

Since his contract expired, Garoppolo became one of the top veteran quarterbacks available in a dry free agency market. The former San Francisco 49ers starter was briefly pursued by a few teams, but had always remained closely tied to the Rams.

Without Garoppolo, Los Angeles currently has Stetson Bennett IV lined up behind Stafford. Bennett has been with the team for his entire three-year professional career, albeit mostly on the practice squad.

Should Garoppolo retire, the Rams will likely return to the veteran market, where Russell Wilson, Tyrod Taylor, Cooper Rush and Teddy Bridgewater headline the remaining options.
