Pistons rumors: Zero chance J.B. Bickerstaff is getting fired after contract extension paying 8 figures annually

The Detroit Pistons’ season came to a disappointing end this weekend as they were eliminated from the playoffs in embarrassing fashion, at home in a blowout against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Pistons had Game 7 on their home court, but despite the collapse, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s job is safe, especially in the wake of a new contract extension, as per longtime NBA insider Marc Stein.

Following the Pistons’ comeback in the opening round of the NBA playoffs, erasing a 3-1 deficit against the Orlando Magic, the team rewarded J.B. Bickerstaff with a contract extension that is worth around eight-figures annually. Stein reports that it’s a similar deal to the one Taylor Jenkins got from the Milwaukee Bucks, and that it’s becoming the standard for NBA head coaches.

The Pistons had secured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference standings and had won 60 wins for the first time since the 2005-06 season. But the playoffs were a different story. They fell behind 3-1 against the Magic and needed an incredible comeback, and they led 3-2 against the Cavs before losing a Game 7 on their own home floor.

But there’s no denying the job Bickerstaff did as head coach this season. This was his second year at the helm after he was let go from the Cavs no less, after the 2023-24 season. Last year, he led the Pistons to an overall record of 44-38 and a return to the postseason after five consecutive years of not making the playoffs.

He also led the Pistons in rightening the ship amid the aftermath of 2023-04 nightmare year which saw the team set an NBA record for most consecutive losses in a single season.
