Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber will look over his shoulder at White Sox’s Colson Montgomery
Kyle Schwarber is the current home run king and has established himself as one of the most prolific power hitters of his era after smashing 212 dingers since the 2022 season. The Philadelphia Phillies star has been punishing big-league baseballs since he was drafted out of Indiana University Bloomington in 2014, causing executives around MLB to rethink their approach to analytics. But he is not the only left-handed slugger with roots in the Hoosier State who is inflicting damage.
Chicago White Sox shortstop and third baseman Colson Montgomery hit his 20th homer of the season during Thursday’s 5-1 win versus the New York Yankees. He has launched the ball over the fence 41 times since July 22, 2025, which is second only to the 49 that Schwarber has crushed in the same span, according to renowned MLB researcher Sarah Langs.
Colson Montgomery’s 41st career home run
He hit his first homer on 7/22/25. Since that day began, he’s second in MLB in home runs, behind only Kyle Schwarber (49) https://t.co/jwRUkIAy2l

There are of course other players who wield elite power — look no further than two-time defending American League and National League MVPs Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani — but few lean so heavily toward the HR category. Schwarber and Montgomery both go deep and strike out at high rates while also posting low batting averages. They are the type of talents who were once shunned by leading analysts. Now, teams often celebrate their skill set.
Balance in the batter’s box remains vitally important, but guys like the two mentioned above are seen as increasingly more valuable in the modern game. The former is 33 years old, so there will come a time when people look for the next Kyle Schwarber. Perhaps the 24-year-old Colson Montgomery, who debuted last Fourth of July, is the man to fill that role in the long run. He is not willing to wait, however.
Montgomery is five homers behind Schwarber’s MLB-leading total of 25. More comparisons are sure to follow as the campaign progresses.
