Pete Alonso’s home run feat vs. Yankees will give Orioles fans hope for rest of season

The Baltimore Orioles have not played the kind of baseball through the first month-plus of the season that they had hoped. They are sitting in fourth place in the American League East, and they are already 7.0 games behind the first-place New York Yankees.

The Orioles hoped to make up some ground on the division leaders this weekend, but they have lost the first two games of a series at Yankee Stadium. Those two losses are problematic, but the Orioles have gotten some good news. First baseman Pete Alonso has belted home runs in both the Friday night and Saturday afternoon games, and he is giving an indication that he is starting to find his stride.

Alonso has not gotten off to a hot start with the Orioles after signing with Baltimore as a free agent in the offseason. The Orioles were a last-place team in the American League East and the thought was that Alonso’s power would help lift the Orioles back to contender status. It hasn’t happened yet, but the former New York Met has hit four home runs in his last nine games. That’s clearly a positive sign for a player who has hammered 40 or more home runs three times in his career, including a career best of 53 home runs during his rookie season in 2019.

Alonso has never hit fewer than 34 home runs in a non-Covid season.

The Orioles have lost three games in a row and they fell to the Yankees left-handed starter Ryan Weathers. Baltimore has struggled badly against southpaws this season, going 0-7 to this point in the season.
