Penguins’ Bryan Rust calls Game 3 vs. Flyers a ‘WWE match’ after Travis Konecny incident

The Pittsburgh Penguins are on the brink of elimination after losing 5-2 in Game 3 of the First Round to the Philadelphia Flyers. After the game, Bryan Rust compared it to a WWE match after he got into a major scuffle with Travis Konecny, according to a recap by Greg Wyshynski.

“The game turned into a bit of a WWE match in the second period. They fed off that, and they were able to capitalize,” Rust noted.

The Penguins entered the second period leading 1-0. But a flurry of penalties led to a Flyers’ power play, where Trevor Zegras connected with a power-play goal. The Flyers got two more goals, one from Rasmus Ristolainen and one from Nick Seeler, to take control of this game. It was Rust’s penalty that led to the power play.

The scuffle caused the referees to award 11 roughing penalties, with the Penguins getting the short end of the stick. Because of that, the Pens lost momentum and are now behind 3-0. This series has generated a lot of animosity, and the teams combined for 50 penalty minutes. Likewise, the Flyers leveled 44 hits, while the Pens had 27.

Both teams capitalized on the power play, as the Pens went 2 for 5, while the Flyers went 2 for 3. Ultimately, it was the Flyers who utilized the momentum. It was a power-play goal by Erik Karlsson that cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third. But it was a power-play conversion by Noah Cates that helped the Flyers regain a two-goal lead.

The Penguins now must recover from this letdown. They will have two days to let this loss marinate, as Game 4 will be on Saturday, with Flyers fans hoping for a sweep, while the Penguins attempt to salvage their quickly fleeting season.
