Pat Surtain explains why Broncos’ Jaylen Waddle addition will frighten AFC

The Denver Broncos entered minicamp this week with one of the NFL’s most notable offseason additions, and star cornerback Patrick Surtain II believes the arrival of Jaylen Waddle adds a new dimension to the offense.

Speaking during Denver’s first day of minicamp preparations for the 2026 season, Surtain praised the former Miami Dolphins receiver in comments shared by Zac Stevens of DNVR Broncos on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I mean speed, speed, speed, but playmaking ability and he’s also got a good feel for the game as well – knowing how to beat certain coverages, certain looks,” Surtain said. “So, it adds a whole different dynamic for sure.”

The Broncos acquired Waddle earlier this offseason in one of the league’s biggest trades. Denver received the veteran receiver from the Miami Dolphins in a deal that sent multiple draft picks to Miami as the Dolphins continued their roster overhaul under new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

Waddle arrives in Denver with a reputation as one of the NFL’s premier speed threats. Since entering the league, he has consistently stretched defenses vertically while also creating explosive plays after the catch. His route-running ability and acceleration have made him a difficult matchup for opposing secondaries.

Pat Surtain believes Jaylen Waddle elevates Broncos’ AFC title hopes

Surtain’s assessment carries additional weight given his experience facing elite receivers on a daily basis. The former Defensive Player of the Year has established himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks and understands the challenges that a player with Waddle’s skill set presents.

The addition gives Denver another weapon as it looks to build around quarterback Bo Nix and continue its rise in the AFC. Waddle joins a Broncos roster that advanced to the AFC Championship Game in 2025 before falling one win short of the Super Bowl.

For Denver, the hope is that Waddle’s combination of speed, playmaking ability and football intelligence can elevate an offense seeking greater explosiveness. Based on Surtain’s early impressions, the Broncos believe they have added a player capable of creating matchup problems throughout the conference.

As training camp approaches, Waddle’s integration into the offense will remain one of the most closely watched developments for a Denver team with growing expectations entering 2026.
