Orioles’ Craig Albernaz tells scary story of Tyler O’Neill concussion

On Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles were forced to placed outfielder Tyler O’Neill on the 7-day concussion protocol. Now, manager Craig Albernaz has revealed exactly what led to that maneuver.

O’Neill had been out of the lineup for three straight games due to an illness. On Thursday he was battling dehydration, when he fell and bumped his head, via Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun. O’Neill was then ultimately scratched from Friday’s lineup and placed on IL.

“O’Neill was dehydrated from his illness on Thursday and he fainted,” Meyer wrote. “The Orioles are guessing he banged his head when he fell, and that’s how he suffered his concussion.”

The outfielder’s illness seemed serious on its own. But now suffering a concussion after feinting, the Orioles will be keeping a close eye on O’Neill. Now on the IL, he’ll have time to rest and focus solely on getting healthier. In turn, Baltimore will play things cautiously before inserting him back in the lineup. Ultimately, they don’t want O’Neill’s health to get worse than it already has been.

When healthy, it has been a slow start for the outfielder as he is hitting .241 with a home run and four RBIs over his first 10 games. The Orioles will hope once O’Neill is past his scary injury woes, he’ll be a pivotal part of the middle of their lineup.

His injury though is continuing the trend for Baltimore this season. They have already seen players like Adley Rutschman hit the injured list while Zach Eflin is now lost for the year. It’ll be a difficult battle for the Orioles to forge their path into the playoffs.

O’Neill is hoping he can aid the Orioles on their quest. But he must first get past his concussion.
