Oregon QB Dylan Raiola sounds off on backing up Dante Moore

Over the last few seasons, Oregon football has become one of the most active teams in the transfer portal every offseason. The Ducks have had some major success stories from doing that, including a pair of staples of their 2025 roster in Dante Moore and Dillon Thieneman.

Dan Lanning and his staff are back at it again this offseason, adding a number of highly-touted recruits in the portal. But one of those additions raised some eyebrows. Quarterback Dylan Raiola, who started at Nebraska for the last two seasons, is coming to Eugene to be the backup to Moore, who turned down the NFL Draft to come back for one more year of college football.

It was a bit of a curious decision for someone that had multiple years of experience as a Big Ten starting quarterback, but Raiola is hoping that learning from one of the best signal-callers in the nation will make him better in 2027. On Tuesday during spring ball, the former five-star recruit commented on the choice to come to Oregon, via Erik Skopil of 247 Sports.

“Obviously, you’ve got to humble yourself. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t take a couple of practices to get kind of get used to it,” Raiola said. “At the same time, it’s all learning and it’s about eventually achieving the goal of mine and obviously of Dante’s right now. That’s our whole room’s goal is to get Dante to where he wants to go. It’s a great person to learn from.”

Interestingly, Moore made a similar choice two offseasons ago after beginning his career as the starter at UCLA. Moore sat behind Dillon Gabriel during the 2024 season while Gabriel was a Heisman Trophy finalist and led the Ducks to a Big Ten Championship.

That decision paid off for Moore, who was one of the best quarterbacks in college football last season and was mocked as a top-five pick before opting to come back to Oregon. Raiola is hoping that sitting a year will have the same benefits in his career after a rocky time at Nebraska.
