Oilers rumors: 3 free agent defensemen who could replace Darnell Nurse
Darnell Nurse’s days in Edmonton may be numbered after the longtime Oilers defenseman requested a trade last week.
Although his $9.25 million cap hit is a hindrance, he’s been incredibly durable throughout his career, and averaged nearly 21 minutes of ice time in 2025-26 while playing more on the penalty kill than any other defenseman on the roster.
Oilers reporter Zach Laing pointed to three players the team could target when free agency opens on July 1 to replace Nurse’s services.
Those three players are Seattle Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, San Jose Sharks blueliner Mario Ferraro and Colorado Avalanche rearguard Nick Blankenburg.
Oleksiak is arguably the most intriguing name of the group.
The veteran has been linked to Edmonton before and would provide the kind of size and physicality that is increasingly difficult to find around the league. Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 252 pounds, Oleksiak remains an imposing presence on the blue line while still possessing above-average mobility for a player of his stature.
Although his game has dipped over the last couple of seasons, he remains an effective defensive defenseman capable of handling difficult minutes. During his five-year tenure with Seattle, Oleksiak recorded 21 goals and 89 points in 389 games while establishing himself as a reliable penalty killer and shutdown option — and he is projected to earn just under $3 million annually on his next contract.
Ferraro represents a younger option with considerably more upside.
The 26-year-old averaged over 21 minutes per game for the Sharks in 2025-26, finishing with seven goals and 23 points in 82 contests. He also led all San Jose defensemen in penalty-kill ice time by a wide margin, showcasing the versatility that would appeal to the Oilers.
While the Sharks struggled as a team, Ferraro’s underlying numbers suggest he remained one of their more effective players. His ability to handle heavy minutes while contributing on the penalty kill would make him a logical fit on Edmonton’s second pairing.
The most under-the-radar candidate may be Blankenburg.
The right-shot defenseman split the season between the Nashville Predators and Avalanche, recording eight goals and 24 points in 61 games. Despite standing just 5-foot-9, Blankenburg plays a surprisingly physical game and consistently impacts play at both ends of the ice.
His advanced metrics were particularly impressive, with his teams controlling more than 55 percent of expected goals during five-on-five play when he was on the ice, per Laing.
Whether the Oilers ultimately replace Nurse through a trade, free agency or a combination of both remains to be seen. But if the organization is serious about reshaping its blue line this summer, Oleksiak, Ferraro and Blankenburg could all be names worth monitoring closely.
