Nuggets rumors: Peyton Watson eyed as sign-and-trade target by Eastern Conference team
The sweepstakes for Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson are officially heating up, and a heavyweight Eastern Conference contender has entered the ring.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Milwaukee Bucks are actively expressing interest in prying the young wing away from Mile High via a sign-and-trade deal. The Bucks join a growing list of persistent suitors, as both the Los Angeles Clippers and Atlanta Hawks have previously registered heavy interest in the rising defender.
Watson exploded for a breakout 2025-26 NBA campaign, establishing himself as an indispensable piece of the Nuggets’ core. The 23-year-old forward averaged career-highs across the board with 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game over 54 appearances.
He put his massive leap on full display during a dominant 17-game stretch in January while holding down the fort after Nikola Jokic suffered a knee injury. Watson even turned heads in a late-season April matchup against the Utah Jazz, where he chipped in six points and three rebounds in just nine minutes on the floor.
However, executing a sign-and-trade for the coveted defender will not come cheap. Watson and his high-profile agent, Rich Paul, are reportedly hunting for a lucrative starting contract in the $25 million-plus annual range. On top of that, Denver is playing severe hardball. The Nuggets front office is demanding a massive trade package comparable to what the Utah Jazz yielded for Walker Kessler, a king’s ransom that includes two first-round draft picks and two first-round pick swaps.
While Milwaukee possesses a handy $25.5 million trade exception to absorb a hefty contract, the Nuggets’ steep asking price remains a roadblock for all parties. If Denver refuses to budge on its evaluation, opposing front offices might have to look elsewhere. But with the Bucks, Clippers, and Hawks aggressively circling the waters, Watson’s restricted free agency is turning into the ultimate summer chess match.
