NHL rumors: The young forward Wild are willing to package to upgrade at center
The Minnesota Wild are flush with star wingers and defensemen — but center depth has been a significant area of need in the State of Hockey for years.
That issue was magnified during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when top-line center Joel Eriksson Ek was injured and Ryan Hartman was forced into a first-line role.
As The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported on Monday afternoon, general manager Bill Guerin is actively searching to upgrade his group of pivots — and top prospect Danila Yurov could become a trade casaulty in that pursuit.
“Guerin has been actively looking to add up front and isn’t afraid to package together quality assets and draft picks in order to land help up the middle,” the hockey insider said.
“The Wild, with just over $9.4 million in salary cap space, have been dangling young centre Danila Yurov as a primary piece in a package for a centre and are also willing to move at least one of their future first round draft picks to get a deal done.”
Yurov has long been viewed as one of the organization’s most valuable young assets, making his inclusion in trade discussions a noteworthy development. The former first-round pick recorded 27 points in 73 games during his first North American season in 2025-26.
The willingness to move both a highly regarded prospect and future draft capital underscores how determined Minnesota is to upgrade its forward group after another season that ended short of expectations.
One player the Wild previously targeted was New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck.
Guerin attempted to acquire Trocheck during the season and reportedly offered a first-round pick as part of the package, but Rangers general manager Chris Drury declined to make a deal.
The Wild have also been connected to Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, who recently requested a trade. Minnesota is believed to be among the teams on Larkin’s preferred destination list, and discussions between the two clubs reportedly remain ongoing.
Minnesota’s aggressive approach makes perfect sense. After acquiring Quinn Hughes and winning a playoff series for the first time in a decade, the Wild are firmly in win-now mode.
The Athletic’s Michael Russo reported that the Wild submitted what he described as a “huge offer” for Brady Tkachuk before the Ottawa Senators dealt the star winger to the Florida Panthers over the weekend.
Now that Tkachuk is off the board, Minnesota appears focused on other options. Whether that ultimately leads to Larkin, Trocheck or another top-six center remains to be seen, but the message from the Wild is becoming increasingly clear: Guerin is willing to sacrifice significant assets if it means solving the team’s long-standing need down the middle.
