NHL rumors: Blackhawks legend Jonathan Toews set to retire after 1-year comeback with Jets
Jonathan Toews made an incredible comeback to the NHL in 2025-26 with the Winnipeg Jets. After missing two seasons due to illness and COVID-19-related issues, Toews returned to the NHL this season. As the season came to an end, it seemed that Toews wanted to return to the Jets.
Now, more is being revealed about Toews’ future, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.
“Nothing official, but at this point it seems likely Jonathan Toews is retiring,” Dreger posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Toews just played his first season with the Jets, playing in 82 games for the first time since 2018-19. It was not a highly successful year, with Toews scoring just 11 goals and adding 18 assists.
Toews was the third overall pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL Draft. He would break into the NHL in the 2007-08 season, playing in 64 games, scoring 24 goals and adding 30 assists. He would go on to be a three-time Stanley Cup champion, while also winning the 2010 Conn Smythe, the 2013 Frank J. Selke Trophy, and the 2015 Mark Messier Leadership Award. In his 15 years with the Blackhawks, he would score 20 or more goals in the first 12 of them. He has also scored 50 or more points in 12 of his 15 seasons. Still, the veteran had missed the two previous seasons due to suffering from symptoms of Long COVID and CIRS.
If this is the end of a career for Toews, it is likely to end in the Hall of Fame. He amassed 383 goals and 529 assists in his NHL career, while playing in 1149 games.
