Roy Hodgson’s seven-game caretaker spell as Bristol City manager came to an end on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Stoke on the final day of the Championship season to secure the club a top half finish in the second tier table.
The former England manager picked up 11 points from his seven matches in charge of the Robins, steadying the ship following the sacking of Gerhard Struber after a run of one win in nine and five defeats in six.
The expiration of the 78-year-old’s short term contract leaves the West Country side on the hunt for a new manager for the new season, as they chase promotion having reached the play-offs in 2025.
Russell Martin is the current favourite to be named as Hodgson’s successor, the Scotsman having been out of a job since his sacking from Rangers back in October after an just four months in the job.
The 40-year-old has experience of winning promotion from the Championship though, having done so in his first season at Southampton, upsetting the odds to beat Leeds in the play off final in 2024.
The former Norwich defender is the currently the favourite could be the man challenged to be at the helm as Bristol City chase a first season in the top flight since their relegation in 1980.
Martin has also been linked with a move to Leicester this summer, though with the Foxes being in League One next season following their second successive relegation, it would seem Ashton Gate seems a more attractive job.

The 45-year-old has been out of a job since departing Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq in January last year, but has been linked with a number of roles back in England since.
The former Liverpool midfielder has only had one job managing in England when he spent almost a year in charge of Aston Villa, and has never managed outside the top flight before but has been rumoured with a couple of Championship roles this summer.
The ex-England international is the current odds on favourite for the Burnley job, the Lancashire side having recently sacked Scott Parker as manager following the confirmation of their relegation from the Premier League this season.
Gerrard is also joint-fourth favourite to be named the next Liverpool manager, though with the Reds having found some form heading into the latter weeks of the campaign it looks less likely that Arne Slot will be given his marching orders at the end of the campaign.
Current Portsmouth manager John Mousinho is also being rumoured for the Ashton Gate job, priced alongside Gerrard at 4/1 to be named the next manager of the south Bristol club.
The 40-year-old took was announced as manager of the Hampshire side in January 2023 following his retirement as a player at Oxford was announced the very same day.
In his first full season in the club, Mousinho won the League One title with Pompey, ensuring a first season in the Championship in 13 years, and has successfully kept them in the division in both seasons since, sealing an 18th place finish in the season just finished.
Other names linked with the position at Ashton Gate include current Brondby manager Steve Cooper, who won Nottingham Forest promotion from the Championship in 2022, priced at 8/1.
