MLB rumors: All signs point to Red Sox making another big trade. But who?

The Boston Red Sox attempted to make a move to upgrade their offense last week when they sent promising young left-handed pitcher Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals for hard-hitting third baseman Curtis Mead. However, that move hit an immediate snag when Mead suffered a fractured wrist in his second plate appearance withe Red Sox when he was hit by a pitch.

The Red Sox have hope that Mead will return before the end of the season, but there are no guarantees as when or if he will be healthy enough to play. However, the Red Sox are expected to make a play for a shortstop because it does not look like they will be able to count on return of Trevor Story.

The Red Sox shortstop has been sidelined since the early part of the season following sports hernia surgery. There have been reports that Story has a chance to begin a minor-league rehab assignment in early August, but the Red Sox are looking at the trade front to find a new shortstop.

One of the shortstops they may try to acquire is Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels. MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today says the Red Sox may also be looking at CJ Abrams of the Washington Nationals and Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins. Abrams has blasted 27 home runs and is a dynamic offensive player, so he could be the most expensive for the Red Sox to acquire.

However, Abrams is not known for his defensive proficiency, and that could turn out to be an issue if he is inserted into the starting lineup.
