Mike Tomlin says he’s ‘having time of my life’ while not coaching Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently gearing up for the 2026 NFL season, which is slated to begin for them in just over a week. The Steelers will be led this year by new head coach Mike McCarthy, who took over for Mike Tomlin after the legendary head coach stepped away following last season.

Recently, Tomlin stopped by The Dan Patrick Show and spoke on how he is enjoying life away from the gridiron.

“I am having the time of my life, to be quite honest with you,” he said, per Dan Patrick on X, formerly Twitter. “I’ve never had an August since I was like eight years old. I’ve always been on a football team, or a camp-like setting of some description, so August was great. I can’t wait to see what September like.”

Tomlin kept the Steelers at or above .500 for his entire tenure with the team, winning a Super Bowl very early on in his run, establishing himself as a legend of the franchise in the process.

Meanwhile, McCarthy is hoping that the introduction of a new face will be enough to get the team off their current carousel of Wild Card blowout losses, which has become a trend over the last few seasons. The Steelers are bringing back most of the same core of players from a year ago, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has announced that this season will be his last, and is hoping to recapture some of his Green Bay Packers-era magic with McCarthy.

In any case, the Steelers are slated to kick off their new season on September 13 against the Atlanta Falcons at 1:00 pm ET in Pittsburgh.
