Michigan basketball’s Mike Boynton adds Ivy League head coach to staff

After Dusty May became the Dallas Mavericks’ head coach, Michigan basketball replaced him with Mike Boynton. The Wolverines’ new leader is now building out his first staff as head coach.

Michigan has hired Mike Martin as an assistant coach, via Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello of ESPN. He had spent the previous 14 seasons as head coach at Brown.

“He’ll bring a veteran head coaching presence to Michigan’s new coaching staff, as he’s won 171 games over [14] seasons,” Thamel wrote. “Martin is a former Brown player who came to the school after working as a Penn assistant.”

Before joining Michigan as an assistant coach in 2024, Boynton already had plenty of experience under his belt. He was head coach at Oklahoma State from 2017-2024 and has been coaching at the college level since 2004.

Still, by adding Martin to the bench, Boynton has even more experience on his side. The head coach understands the expectations that will be placed on his shoulders. He wants as many voices as he can trust in his corner.

Over his 14-year run at Brown, Martin’s teams went 171-202 overall. He was named Ivy League Coach of the Year in 2019, helping lead Brown to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

While going from head to assistant coach may be seen as a downgrade, Michigan is the defending National Champions. Their roster and team overall are going to look much different in 2026, but the Wolverines are still intent on competing.

Martin will now have an opportunity to aid the Wolverines’ cause first-hand. In doing so, he could earn his first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Whatever his reasonings may be, Martin is now ready to help Boynton lead Michigan’s next era.
