Michael van Gerwen punched in face in bar fight as security forced to intervene

Michael van Gerwen was punched in the face during a bar brawl in his native Netherlands this week.

A video of the three-time darts world champion emerged on social media of Van Gerwen involved in an ugly spat as he was out celebrating King’s Day, which was on Monday, in Den Bosch.

The footage shows Van Gerwen appearing to argue with a man outside a bar before the man through a right-handed punch towards him.

Van Gerwen initially looked to pursue the aggressor, however two security guards apprehended the man, meaning Van Gerwen was unable to get to him.

A statement from the PDC read: “We are aware of footage circulating of an incident involving Michael van Gerwen.

“He did not provoke the situation and was not at fault. As this is a private matter, we will not be commenting further.”

The news comes ahead of night 13 of the Premier League with Van Gerwen looking to secure his place in the finals at London’s O2 on May 28.

Ahead of night 13 in Aberdeen, Van Gerwen has the fourth and final spot in the table having claimed just one night win.

Luke Littler and Jonny Clayton, who are top and second respectively, have already sealed their places in the finals, while Gerwyn Price is third.

Van Gerwen’s quarter-final showdown sees him face Luke Humphries.

Kebab shop brawl

This is not the only occasion footage of Van Gerwen being involved in a fight has emerged in recent months.

He was the subject of a video that circulated on Snapchat showing him in a physical altercation at a kebab shop in September.

Punches were thrown in the video, however, the grainy footage made it unclear who threw them.

On that incident, Van Gerwen said: “After an enjoyable night out, we wanted to grab something to eat, and unfortunately I ended up in a situation you’d rather avoid.

“The man came at me from the kitchen, not the other way round, following a verbal exchange.

“People are making it sound more dramatic than it actually was, which is a shame.

“As you can see, people stepped in straight away and the situation was resolved. I even spoke with the man’s nephew afterwards, and we cleared the air before we left.”

It’s reported that this incident also happened in Den Bosch.
