Mets trade David Peterson to NL Central club amid brutal season
After turning in an error-filled effort against the Chicago Cubs so frustrating that even ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan was dunking on them on social media, the New York Mets have decided to make a trade, sending pitcher David Peterson to the NL Central.
The catch? Peterson is heading to the Cubs, so he won’t have to travel far from where he played earlier in the day, as reported, ironically enough, by Passan.
“Trade news: The Chicago Cubs are acquiring left-hander David Peterson from the New York Mets, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote.
Initially joining the Mets organization as the 20th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft following a run at the University of Oregon, Peterson has been in the majors since 2020. While his career has been up and down in New York, with 2024 serving as the high-water mark of his career thus far, expectations were high heading into 2026 after he was named an All-Star the season prior. Instead, his ERA stretched into the sixes at 6.09, and he only started eight of the 16 games he appeared in, marking his first stint off the bench in the regular season since 2023.
Now traded to a Chicago team that is sitting third in the NL Central despite their own incredible expectations, it will be interesting to see how Peterson is used and if he can recapture his game from a few years back in Illinois. If he can, the Cubs will have a choice to make about his future, as Peterson is currently on a one-year, $8.1 million contract he signed in arbitration.
