Mets’ Pedro Martinez did not mince words after NY’s latest collapse

This season has been an abject horror for the New York Mets. They started off fine, going 7-4 in the first 11 games of the season. Nothing to write home about, but it builds a good buffer for them to heat up later on in the year. Surely, the team would continue at this slow but steady pace, right?

Well, the Mets fell off in the blink of an eye. After that 7-4 start, the Mets have now lost 12 straight games. This streak is nearly unprecedented: the current record for longest losing streak is the 14-game streak by the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. There are a lot of reasons for their losses, but one thing is clear: something needs to change.

On the post-game show, MLB legend Pedro Martinez urged the Mets to do something. While he doesn’t advocate for anyone to be fired, Martinez says that New York has to show some fight.

“The Mets, as an organization right now, need to make a statement,” Martinez said. “I’m not asking for anybody’s head, but something needs to change right now. It’s either you dump, or you load yourself again, or something needs to be done. The coaching staff needs to change the strategy that they’re using. Maybe go to small ball, like you were saying, and play small ball, take the humble approach. But I think the Mets must get together right now before it’s too late and have a drastic change in everything they’re doing.”

It was another collapse that did the Mets in on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins. New York was able to hold a 3-0 lead against Minnesota during the game. However, the pitching gave up run after run throughout the next innings. Another awful inning from closer Devin Williams did them in, giving up two runs in the ninth inning while the game was tied to completely knock the wind out of the Mets’ sails.

The Mets will once again take on the Twins in the penultimate game of their series. Can New York do anything to get themselves out of this rut they dug themselves in?
