Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reveals what he liked about Zach Thornton’s big-league debut
The New York Mets continue searching for answers during a difficult 2026 season, but manager Carlos Mendoza saw encouraging signs from Zach Thornton during the rookie’s major league debut. Despite Wednesday’s 8-4 loss vs. the Washington Nationals, Thornton’s composure became one of the main storylines following the game at Nationals Park.
Thornton entered the outing facing considerable pressure because of the Mets’ growing pitching concerns. With Clay Holmes sidelined by a fractured fibula, the club continues to rely on inexperienced arms to help stabilize an injury-depleted staff. That reality placed additional attention on Thornton’s first appearance at the major league level.
The rookie left-hander immediately encountered adversity after CJ Abrams launched a three-run homer during the first inning to give Washington an early advantage. However, Thornton quickly settled into the game afterward and responded with far more confidence as the outing continued. He retired nine of his final 10 hitters while showing the poise Mendoza valued most after the loss.
SNY TV shared Mendoza’s reaction Wednesday night on X, formerly Twitter, as the Mets manager discussed what impressed him most about Thornton’s debut despite the difficult opening inning.
‘The one thing that I liked, even after he got punched there in that first inning, he didn’t back down.”

Mendoza’s comments reflected the broader perspective surrounding Thornton’s performance. The manager focused less on the final stat line and more on how the 24-year-old handled early adversity under difficult circumstances. Thornton adjusted his approach, attacked the strike zone more aggressively, and prevented Washington from completely pulling away offensively.
The Mets now sit at 21-28 and remain near the bottom of the National League East standings. Still, Thornton’s debut may provide New York with another potential option as the organization continues searching for stability within its heavily tested pitching staff.
